Ashoka -Indian Emperor

An Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty. He was a powerful king and reigned over a realm covering much of the Indian sub- continent.Witnessing the aftermath of the destructive war, his remorse caused him to complete change course and embrace Buddhism.

Ashoka Period :273BC -232BC

  • Bindusara was succeeded by Ashoka. Ashoka was son of Bindusara
  • According to Buddhist tradition Ashoka Indian emperor usurped the throne after killing his 99 brothers and spread Tissa, the youngest one. Radhagupta a minister of Bindusara helped him in Fratricidal struggle.
  • Under the Ashoka, the Mauryan empire reached its climax. For the first time, the whole of the sub – continent, leaving out the extreme south, was under imperial control.
  • Ashoka fought the Kalinga war in 261BC in 9th year of coronation. The king was moved by the massacre in this war and therefore abandoned the policy of physical occupation in favour of policy of cultural conquest. In other words, Bherighosa was replaced by Dhammaghosa.
  • Ashoka sent missionaries to the kingdoms of the Cholas and Pandyas, and five states ruled by Greek, Ceylon(Sri lanka), Suvarnbhumi (Burma) and also parts of South -East Asia.
