  • According to Jain tradition there were 24 Thirthankaras,the first being Rishabdev/Adinatha and last being Mahavira.
  • The Vishnu Purana And Bhagavat Purana describe as an incarnation of Narayana.
  • The name of two Jain Tirthankara and Aristanemi are found in the Rig Veda.
  • Historical proof of only the last two Parshawanath(23rd) and Mahavira(24th)
  • Parsawanath was a prince of Banaras who abandoned the throne and led the life of hermit and died at Sammet-Shikar Giridh, Jharkhand.

Mahavira’s Life

  • Mahavira was born in 540BC in a village Kundgrama near Vaishali in Bihar.
  • His father the head of Siddhartha was in the head of the Janthrika Kshtriya clan under Vaji of Vaishali and his mother Trishala was the sister of Chetaka, the king of Vaishali.
  • Mahavira was married to Yashoda(daughter of Samavira king) and a produced daughter Annoja Priyadarshni whose husband Jamali, became the first disciple of Mahavira.
  • At the age of 30, after his father’s death he renounced his family,became an ascetic and proceeded in search of truth. He was accompained by Makhali Gosala, but later due to some diffrences Gosala left him and founded Ajivika sect.
  • At the age of 42, under a sal tree at jambhikagarma on the bank of river Rijupalika, Mahvira Attained Kaivalya
  • He deliverd his first sermon Pava his 11 disciples. Later he founded a jain Sangha at Pava.
  • At the age of 72 in 468 BC, he passed away at Pavapuri near Biharsharif in Bihar.

  1. Right faith- it is belief in Thirathankaras.
  2. Right Knowledge – it is the knowledge of the Jain creed.
  3. Right action/ Conduct – it is the practice of 5 vows of Jainism.

Five vows of Jainism(the first four vows laid down by Parshawanath. The fifth one was added by Mahavira.)

  1. Ahimsa- Non Violence
  2. Satya – Non lying
  3. Asteya – Non stealing
  4. Aparigraha -Non possesion
  5. Brahmcharya – Chastity
